Adress: Zakusalas krastmala 1, Riga 1050

Väderkvarnen i Araisi

"First windmills in Latvia were built in the 14th centry in towns and castles. Araisi windmill is the so called Duch- type windmills with an immobile body and revolving <<head>>, which was to be turned against the wind with the help of a special mechanism when standing on the ground outside the building.

The possible year of building the Araisi windmill is 1852, because a stone with an inscription - Anno 1852 - was found in the wall of the building.

Ones the mill belonged to Drabesi manor.
From 1921 to 1925 the operation of the windmill was not necessary, so a small piano-makers´workshop was equqioed there.

The last major repairs were done in early 1980íes, when the mill became the property of the Gauja National Park and was restored as in the times when flour was ground and groats ghopped. Adolfs Bitmets was the leading master of the renovation.

Araisi windmill is a culture monuments of state significance.
When building the mill, one of the main parts was the axis, called <<the Big Martin>. Finally the <<cap>> was made and wings added, on wich rough canvas sails were put.

The windmill has 4 storeys. All the works in the mill were managed by the miller, who was helped by fellows and apprentices. One could become a miller only in 6-7 years time.

In the third storey the grain was poured into the container - shaker, and from there they got into the millstones in the scond storey.
The millstones have carved grooves, so, being put with the groovy sides together  (in opposite directions), the ensured the grain to be ground.

The necessary refinement for the flour was gained by regulating the distance between the millstones. This mechanism is in the first storey, were the flour and groats from the holds were poured into sacks.

The millstones wore out, they hade to renewed or put anew. For this purpose a special equpment was used to lift the stones and put them aside. The wornout millstones were not just thrown away, they were built into walls of houses or used for other purposes.

The people from the mill held a belief thay millstones bring blessing to the house."

Information ifrån informationstavlor

"Araisi Lake Fortress is one of the ten lake fortresses in Latvia. It is Known as an archaeological site already since 1876. Late (1959 – 1964) when this kind of lake settlements have been discovered in another nine lakes of the vidzeme region, aralsi was chose for more extensively and detailed archaeological research. A research team from institute of Latvian History, led by Janis Apals, worked here for ten seasons (1965-1969, 1975 – 1979) and excavated three quarters of the total area of the 2500 m2 large lake fortress, as well as a way which connected fortress with shore.

During excavation it was found out that Araisi Lake Fortress has been built and inhabited in 9th-10th century by a community belonging to the largest prehistorically tribe – Latgallians. The fortress was built in the lake on low, overflowing island for defensive purposes, fortification system was similar to fortifications on hillforts.

The cultural layer consisted of five construction layers, wich showed five sequential settlement phases without any chronological interruption. Well preserved in the wet soil were remains of wooden buildings. These circumstances gave chance to determine a whole plan of each construction phase as well as plan of individual buildings and methods of construction.

Araisi Lake Fortress is the first so extensively excavated and reconstructed lake fortress in North-eastern Europe.
Not only wooden structures were well preserved in this cultural layer, but also artifacts made from organic materials (bast, birch bark, wood, textiles etc.), among them were artifacts with high culture heritage value.

This is a reason why it was decided that reconstruction of the lake fortress will be made as main element of an archaeological open-air museum in Araisi. The best preserved constructions were from the first density of population, from 9th century, and it was chose for reconstruction.

Reconstruction work is still going on. Lower sections of buldings has been rebuilt as copies from original structures, while upper parts are reconstructed in accordance with structural elements found in cultural layer, as well as ethnographic parallels and construction logic. Therefore reconstruction of Araisi Lake Fortress has a high level of historical certainty."

Araisi slott

"Araisi Castle was built int the time of the Livonian Order and inhabited in the 14th-17th centrury. The Castle occupies the eastern part of the peninsula extending into Lake Araisi, while its extensive outer bailey lies in the western part. The castle is separated from the outer bailey by a dry ditch, which was spanned by a drawbridge at the castle gates.
up to 1561, the castle was the centre of the Arasi Castellany of the state of the Livonian Order and an economic ancillary to Cesis Castle – the master´s residence. In the Trans-Daugava Duchy (1561-1629), it was the centre of an estate or folvark belonging to the king of Poland.

During archaeological excavations along the west wall of the castle (1972-1974; 1981-1992) were the remains of several residental and ancillary buildings, heating device, the place of the gate and drawbridges, as well as part of the courtyard covered with cobbles. The stuctures reflect the building traditions of German medieval castles, while the ornaments and agricultural implements found here indicate that a significant proportion of the castle residents belonged to the indigenous population.

Hemsida: http://skangali.lv/
Gården ägdes före andra världskriget av vår tidigare statsminister Olof Palmes morföräldrar von Knieriem. Syskonen Catharina, Claës och Olof Palme tillbringade många barndomssomrar här.

Gården nationaliserades under sovjettiden.

St Johannes kyrka i Cesis

Cesis medeltida slott

Borgen i Cesis började byggas 1207.
